Unless you have ever been unfortunate enough to not have a roof over your head, many of you will be unaware of the struggles of day to day life for the homeless. So, to open our eyes to this reality St John’s Ambulance and Brighton Homeless Service are staging a ‘Sleep Out’. The Homeless Service helps the less fortunate to get a primary health service, something we all take for granted. Run by volunteers in and around Brighton and Hastings the project is funded completely by donation and Friday’s event will raise some much needed money to help continue their hard work.
The organisers of the event will provide a soup dinner, this being a luxury the homeless don’t experience on a daily basis. All that is required of you is to bring your cardboard and to build your home for the night. Guest speaker James Bowen, author of ‘A Street Cat Named Bob’ will be attending the event along with other proceedings. When you finally awake with the break of dawn and the morning frost, a breakfast will greet you. Another perk of our fortunate lives we don’t consider being so.
I think this event and all participants are commendable and courageous. It’s taking yourself away from comfort and stability and throwing yourself in at the deep end to experience something we all hope to never actually become reality. But, despite that, there is no one more commendable than the homeless that face this inevitably every day.
St John’s, The Homeless Service and all their selfless volunteers strive to make all lives important and purposeful. Your support and help could really help improve somebodies life.
‘Nothing is more tragic than a life lost needlessly. Yet every year, too many people die in situations where first aid could have given them the chance to live St John Ambulance teaches people first aid so that they can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved’
– St John’s Ambulance.
Every penny helps support this incredible charity and Brightonians are some of the most generous and caring people I’ve ever met. So lets make a huge difference this Friday and from now on.
