In a world without touch, where children are raised by robots, two prospective parents navigate their matching process and its emotional impact.
Written by multi-award winning playwright Sam Chit tenden for socially distanced performance in 2020 and directed by established director Penny Gkritzapi, Chemistry deals with the imagined consequences of an extreme societal reaction against human contact.
Chemistry is set in a future world without touch. Children are conceived through IVF, overseen by robot Fosterers. Prospective parents must meet to approve their genetic matching. In one such pairing meeting, the sophisticated Bea and first-timer Jay try to nav igate the process and their strong reactions to each other.
Chemistry explores reproductive politics, human at tachment and the dangers of a technology-driven state. It plays out intensely and claustrophobically in real time.
Writer Sam Chittenden says, “I wrote this piece back in 2020 in response to a challenge to write something that could be staged with social distancing. We are excited to be bringing this intimate and dystopian piece to the unique space available at The Lantern Theatre in Brighton.”
Directed by Penny Gkritzapi; With Rowland Sterling & Harriet Main.
Original music by Sophia Panagiotopoulou & Panagiotis Sotiropoulos.
