Few sights say British summer quite like a sky full of hot air balloons. The Bristol Balloon Fiesta returns from 7–9 August 2026, when more than 100 balloons take to the air above the rolling parkland of Ashton Court Estate on the edge of Bristol. Now approaching its fifth decade, the free-to-attend festival is one of the UK’s great summer days out — and a genuine bucket-list spectacle.

The mass ascents and the famous Nightglows

At the heart of it all is a wonderful game of chance: whether conditions will allow the balloons to fly. When the weather plays ball, the compact central arena erupts into a rainbow of colour twice a day — at dawn (around 6am) and again just before dusk (around 6pm) from Friday to Sunday, as scores of balloons lift off together.

Stay after dark on Friday and Saturday for the event’s signature Nightglows, when dozens of tethered balloons inflate and pulse their burners in time to music — a genuinely goosebump-inducing finale that brings the crowd to its feet.

Five reasons to go to the Bristol Balloon Fiesta

  1. The spectacle — 100-plus balloons rising over the Somerset countryside at first light.
  2. The Nightglows — balloons glowing to a soundtrack after dark on Friday and Saturday.
  3. All-day entertainment — Meet the Pilots, inflation races, tethered balloons, stunt displays and Samba bands keep the arena buzzing even if the wind grounds the flights.
  4. In The Clouds — step inside a cold-inflated balloon for an immersive film, audio and lighting experience telling the story of Bristol’s ballooning heritage.
  5. Food, families and future engineers — from Bristol restaurant Pasture’s ticketed dining and the new Pony Farm Bus, to the James Dyson Foundation’s hands-on STEM Elevation Hub, live acoustic sets on the Moon Stage (curated by BIMM Bristol) and a dedicated kids’ stage.

Why Bristol?

There’s a reason the fiesta calls Bristol home. The city is the birthplace of European ballooning and now considered the sport’s world capital, and the festival has become a globally recognised symbol of the place. It’s heritage, engineering and pure wonder rolled into one weekend.

How to visit the Bristol Balloon Fiesta

The Bristol Balloon Fiesta runs 7–9 August 2026 at Ashton Court Estate, Bristol. Entry is free, though onsite car parking is charged and there are optional hospitality packages to upgrade your day. Ascents and Nightglows are always weather-dependent, so check timings and plan around the forecast. Full details are at bristolballoonfiesta.co.uk.

We’ll be heading along to soak up the spectacle — keep an eye out for photos and highlights from the weekend.
