Christmas at Kew 2026: Is the Light Trail Worth the Trip from Brighton?
Christmas at Kew returns on Friday 13 November, turning London’s largest UNESCO World Heritage Site into a three-kilometre festive light trail that runs until Sunday 3 January 2027. Billed as the UK’s original Christmas light trail, this year’s edition brings world-premiere installations, returning favourites and, for the first time, dedicated adult-only evenings. For Brighton visitors looking for a big festive day out, it’s a strong candidate.
What’s New at Christmas at Kew in 2026
Several installations are premiering exclusively for this year’s trail. Squidsoup’s Infinite Choir, a sound and light piece, will be installed at the Treetop Walkway, while Studio Vertigo’s Drift, inspired by seeds carried on the wind, will see illuminated spheres rise almost two metres into the air. French collective TILT will present giant blooms programmed to music, and ITHACA studio will unveil an animated willow tree with light that appears to cascade like water from its canopy.
Around the Temperate House, new towering monoliths will lead towards Pagoda Vista, and the Skirt Trees will nod to the Nutcracker and the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Palm House Pond’s fountain display also returns, rounding off the route.
The Favourites Returning
Regulars will find the familiar highlights back in place: the Christmas Cathedral’s glowing arches, the Fire Garden, the Pealight Tree, the Bubble Walk and the Temperate House light show. There’s also a traditional fairground, a visit from Father Christmas, and festive food and drink along the route, including mulled wine for adults, with the Botanical Brasserie offering festive menus for a full evening out.
Adult-Only Evenings and Quiet Access
New for 2026, Christmas at Kew will hold adult-only evenings (18+) on Thursday 3 December and Wednesday 9 December, aimed at friends, colleagues and couples. Quiet Access sessions for visitors with hidden and visual disabilities will run on 21 November and 1, 16 and 26 December, and must be pre-booked.
Planning Christmas at Kew from Brighton
The trail opens from 4.20pm to 10pm on selected dates, closes at 9pm on 24 December, and is closed on 25 December. Entry is by advance booking only, with last entry times varying by gate, so it’s worth booking a slot that leaves enough time for the full route. Allow roughly two hours each way from Brighton by public transport, and check the last trains home before choosing an evening — the organisers also encourage visitors to travel by public transport, with limited pre-bookable parking available.
Every ticket supports the work of RBG Kew, a conservation charity — and Brighton readers may be interested to know it also runs Wakehurst in West Sussex, home to the Millennium Seed Bank.
