Natalie Imbruglia is entering a new chapter with the release of her highly anticipated new album ‘Algorithm’, out this Friday, with the Australian singer-songwriter bringing her new music to Brighton’s Resident on Thursday 10 September as part of her intimate record store tour.
The new album marks a creative new era for Imbruglia, defined by empowerment, freedom and artistic independence. From her multi-million-selling breakthrough ‘Torn’ to more recent performances alongside Olivia Rodrigo, the singer has built a career spanning decades — and ‘Algorithm’ represents a deeply personal record created on her own terms.
Imbruglia describes the making of the album as a particularly special experience, saying: “There was a flow to the process of making this record that I’d only really felt on my first album, where there was a little bit of magic and a little bit of grace behind it.”
She adds: “It’s a beautiful thing to be at this age where nothing is projected onto me, and I can take a chance on myself. I get to be the master of my own destiny.”
The album’s focus track, ‘Beautiful Love’, provides a fitting finale. The glimmering, dancefloor-friendly anthem explores vulnerability, self-acceptance and the freedom that comes from overcoming difficult emotions.
Imbruglia wrote the track with acclaimed producer Fraser T Smith, whose credits include Adele, Dave, Stormzy and Sam Smith, alongside Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol.
“I had the most incredible experience with those guys,” Imbruglia says. “They listened and were able to channel everything I wanted to say. When you’ve felt ashamed, you can be carried away by the momentum of it. But once you find your way out, it’s the most freeing feeling in the world.”
The album follows the singles ‘Upside Down’, ‘Algorithm’ and ‘Just Drive’, which have already generated considerable attention. The campaign has included a Radio 2 playlist and premiere, appearances and conversations on ‘Sounds of The 90s’ with Fearne Cotton and ‘Begin Again’ with Davina McCall, while the album reached No. 2 on the iTunes Pre-order Chart.
‘Algorithm’ also sees Imbruglia exploring a broad contemporary pop sound. Opening track ‘Debbie’ combines multilayered vocals with sleek synth-pop, while ‘Catastrophe’ delivers a handclap-heavy disco-pop sound. ‘Who Dimmed The Lights’ brings a more emotional dimension through cascading piano and a powerful chorus, while ‘Endgame’ explores the tension between perfectionism and being present.
The album is available digitally and physically, with a limited-edition deluxe orange gatefold vinyl available through selected retailers. The special edition includes a two-track 7-inch single and signed artcard.
