Thirty years after Come Find Yourself crashed the Britpop party with its unmistakable New York swagger, Huey Morgan is bringing the sound that defined Fun Lovin’ Criminals to Brighton.
The singer, guitarist and broadcaster will perform at Brighton Concorde 2 on 20 October, as part of a new UK tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of the band’s explosive 1996 debut.
Released at the height of Britpop, Come Find Yourself stood apart from much of the guitar-driven music dominating the charts. Its laid-back combination of hip-hop, funk, rock, soul and cinematic grooves gave Fun Lovin’ Criminals a distinctive identity, while tracks including Scooby Snacks helped establish the band as one of the most recognisable acts of the era.
For Morgan, the anniversary is more than a trip down memory lane. He is returning to the material with a brand-new band, revisiting songs that helped launch his career while bringing fresh energy to the music.
The original album remains a cult favourite, built around the kind of loose, groove-led sound that made Fun Lovin’ Criminals difficult to categorise. Its New York influence was central to the band’s appeal, arriving in Britain at a time when the domestic music scene was dominated by Oasis, Blur, Pulp and a wave of Britpop acts.
Three decades later, Morgan is reclaiming that musical territory on stage.
The Brighton show is likely to appeal both to fans who remember the original release and to a younger audience discovering Fun Lovin’ Criminals’ music for the first time. The anniversary tour offers a chance to hear the songs that made Come Find Yourself such an unlikely success, while Morgan’s new line-up gives the performances a contemporary edge.
Brighton’s Concorde 2, one of the city’s best-known live music venues, provides a fitting setting for an evening built around the atmosphere, rhythm and attitude of the band’s early years.
For anyone who remembers the sound of Come Find Yourself — or simply enjoys music that refuses to stay inside one genre — Morgan’s Brighton appearance promises a nostalgic but newly energised return to one of the 1990s’ most distinctive musical records.
