Brighton has lost two of its best-known LGBTQ+ venues this year. Now a show about disappearing queer nightlife is coming to the city. Congregational: An Alternative Choral Mass for the Nightclub plays Brighton Dome on Friday 30 October, and the city’s own Brighton Rainbow Chorus will join creator and performer Fatt Butcher on stage.
Congregational is described as gig theatre. It sits somewhere between a live gig, a piece of theatre, a choral performance and a rave. It treats the nightclub as a kind of church: a place where people gather, belong and celebrate together. At its heart is a question that queer communities across the UK are facing: what happens when those spaces start to disappear?
A Brighton Choir on Stage
The Brighton performance has a local element. Brighton Rainbow Chorus, one of the city’s LGBTQ+ community choirs, will perform alongside Fatt Butcher. The local community will be part of the show, not just its audience.
Brighton Local Angle
The show arrives at a difficult moment for queer Brighton. The recent closures of R-Bar and Charles Street Tap have taken away two well-known venues from the heart of the city’s LGBTQ+ scene, in a city that has long called itself the UK’s gay capital.
Brighton isn’t alone. Rising rents, higher energy bills and changing nightlife habits have closed LGBTQ+ venues across the country. The city has shown that independent venues can be saved: The Pipeline was secured through community ownership this year. Congregational asks what queer spaces mean to the people who use them, and what is lost when they close. Those are questions Brighton is asking right now.
It also comes as the city thinks about the future of its visitor and night-time economy, much of which has been built on its LGBTQ+ reputation.
