Who enjoyed waking up to snow on Saturday? This weekend finally marked the start of winter, and this morning we were greeted by the gorgeous winter sun, the satisfying crunch of frosty leaves, and some were lucky enough to see me slip over on some ice on the way to work. The fires are roaring, the electric blankets are turned on and we can finally fish out our big coats from the depths of our wardrobes. We are lucky to be able to enjoy the little things winter brings, because there are many that cannot. However, there is something you can do to help.

Last week for our Charity Tuesday feature we wrote about The Clock Tower Sanctuary, a place for young homeless people to go and have a shower, wash their clothes and have a hot meal. This winter, food chain Pret a Manger have chosen The Clock Tower Sanctuary as one of its five charities that will feature on its Christmas sandwiches and salad boxes sold in their 300 shops worldwide. This means that whenever you buy a Christmas sandwich or baguette from Pret, 50p will be donated to the Pret Foundation Trust to support its charity partners, one of which is The Clock Tower Sanctuary.

This winter, The Clock Tower Sanctuary will receive over 1,000 visits by homeless young people. Their day centre offers a safe place where young people can receive support, advice and get help getting their lives back on track. Kate Kirkham, Director at The Clock Tower Sanctuary has said “Brighton and Hove has one of the biggest homeless populations in the UK and youth homelessness is a particular issue…the support we’ve had from Pret customers has been incredibly helpful and we’re chuffed to bits to be benefiting from their support this Christmas too”. Mark, who is 24 years old and has been supported by The Clock Tower Sanctuary says “Without The Sanctuary, I would still be sleeping in a tent under Brighton Pier, it’s as simple as that. It’s great so many people will find out about The Sanctuary”.

The Clock Tower Sanctuary is encouraging everyone to pop into their local Pret, pick up a specially packaged sandwich with the Clock Tower logo on and upload a selfie to Twitter or Facebook with the hashtag #sarnieselfie. Nicki Fisher, Head of the Pret Foundation Trust said “The Pret Foundation Trust raised an incredible £1.5 million for our charity partners last year, and this year we’re hoping to beat that figure again. Donations from our Christmas products play a huge part in this…This year’s ‘A Little Thank You’ campaign is our chance to connect our customers to some of the organisations they support every time they buy one our soups throughout the year, or our sandwiches at Christmas. Whether knowingly or not, they’re making a huge difference to the lives of the people who need it most”.The Sanctuary at Pret

The Clock Tower Sanctuary is a wonderful charity, and they deserve every penny they receive from this project. So if you need an excuse to treat yourself to a delicious Christmas sandwich from Pret, you now have one. Also, the calories don’t count if you’re giving to charity, right?
