Fasten your seatbelts… Matthew Bourne’s critically acclaimed dance thriller The Car Man is coming to Eastbourne’s Congress Theatre this November, bringing its explosive combination of passion, betrayal, violence and desire to the Sussex coast.
Inspired by Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Bourne’s award-winning production relocates the story to a fictional 1950s American garage diner, where the arrival of a mysterious stranger sets a seemingly close-knit community on a collision course with passion, jealousy and revenge.
Directed and choreographed by Matthew Bourne, The Car Man combines powerful contemporary dance with cinematic storytelling and a score by Terry Davies, incorporating Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite after Bizet.
The production has become one of New Adventures’ best known works since its original premiere, earning a reputation for its provocative storytelling, muscular choreography and distinctive visual style.
Set against a world of chrome, grease and small-town Americana, The Car Man explores the darker side of desire and ambition as relationships unravel and dreams turn deadly.
With its blend of dance, drama and thriller-style storytelling, the production promises an intense theatrical experience for audiences in Eastbourne.
The Eastbourne run takes place at the Congress Theatre from Wednesday 18 to Saturday 21 November, with tickets currently available from £27.50. The production has an age guidance of 15 and includes scenes of a sexual nature, sexual assault, brief male nudity, smoking, strobe lighting, haze, gunshots and violence including blood.
