Passenger will play an open air show at Hove Park This Weekend- Sunday 6th September, with The Staves, John Smith, Ber and Worthing’s Chris Simmons supporting.
For Mike Rosenberg it is a short walk from where he started. He built his audience busking on Brighton’s streets before “Let Her Go” made him one of the most-streamed artists in the world, and the Hove Park show brings him back to within a mile or two of the pitches he used to work.
The Line-Up
The Staves bring the sibling harmonies that have made them one of the most admired acts in British folk, touring behind their most recent album All Now.
John Smith has spent two decades near the centre of the UK folk scene and has shared stages with Joan Baez, Jackson Browne and David Gray.
Ber arrives on the back of her debut album Good, Like It Should Be, having built an international following through a run of EPs.
Chris Simmons, from Worthing, completes the bill. He has toured with Sir Tom Jones, Paloma Faith and Simply Red, and his independently released single A Cold December reached the UK Christmas Top 10 — a rare achievement for an unsigned artist.
Why This One Matters Locally
Passenger is the most successful musician this city has produced in twenty years and he has stayed independent throughout, releasing sixteen studio albums without a major label.
“Let Her Go” reached number one in nineteen countries and remains among the most Shazamed songs ever recorded. He has a Brit Award nomination, an Ivor Novello for Most Performed Work, and an Olivier nomination for his work on The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry.
He could play anywhere. He is playing a park in Hove.
The choice of venue is also worth noting. Hove Park is a genuine park rather than an arena — 40 acres of Victorian public space, with none of the infrastructure a stadium show assumes. That has implications for anyone living nearby on the day, and for anyone trying to get across Hove that afternoon.
