Produced by pioneering arts agency In Between Time, in collaboration with Dreamy Place and videoclub for this year’s Brighton Festival, the installation combines a constellation of flickering lights with an emotive soundscape of whispers, roars and lullabies, transforming darkness into an inclusive, safe space for contemplation and connection, a tribute to those who have been marginalised, silenced, or lost.
The project has been described by audiences as “a wonderground”, “awe-inspiring” and “utterly beautiful”.
Each visitor is invited to become part of the work themselves by creating and placing their own light, joining a growing global chorus reclaiming dark spaces as sanctuaries of shared strength.
First co-created with 130 women and girls in Bristol and shown in the Redcliffe Caves, We Are Warriors will tour to Australia and Latvia following its presentation in Brighton. The tour is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
The Cab Road Tunnel was originally used for horse-drawn taxis to access Brighton Station. Nowadays, the area is usually off-limits to the public, but has been used for several art installations in recent years. We Are Warriors will allow more people to discover the space or see it in a new light.
“This work is all about pushing back the dark,” says Helen Cole, Artistic Director and Founder of In Between Time. “We hoped We Are Warriors would spark resonance, reflection and resilience with Brighton audiences, but we’ve been blown away by our visitors’ insight and generosity.”
