Council services will be out in force and turning their attention to St James’s Street for a community clean-up next week as part of ongoing efforts and investment in creating cleaner, safer and more welcoming neighbourhoods, as well as to encourage residents and businesses to get involved.
The community clean-up will take place on Monday 28 September from 7am to 12 noon. Different council teams will be coming together to remove graffiti, stickers and posters as well as litter picking, sweeping and deep cleaning pavements and public spaces.
As part of the event, residents living on St James’s Street and the roads directly off it will be able to dispose of one bulky household item free of charge at one of three designated drop-off points. Proof of address or photo identification will be required.
Council and police officers will also be on hand to offer advice and support to residents and businesses on waste management and local environmental concerns.
Businesses will be able to talk to officers about the council’s new commercial graffiti removal service and the waste collection services on offer. They are also encouraged to get involved by helping with litter picking and cleaning the area around their premises.
Any residents are welcome to come down, meet the team, ask questions or get involved in the clean up. Equipment and support will be provided.
Councillor Tim Rowkins, Cabinet member for Net Zero and Environmental Services, said: said: “Our communities care deeply about the places where they live, work and spend their time, and so do we.
“Council teams are out across Brighton & Hove every day cleaning streets, removing graffiti, collecting waste and helping to keep public spaces welcoming for everyone. But every now and again, we like to arrive in force and blitz a whole area.
“This clean-up event is a chance for residents and businesses to join with our own teams in a collective effort to improve the area.
“We all want Brighton & Hove to be clean, welcoming and somewhere people can take pride in.
“By bringing council staff, local businesses and residents together, we can make a visible difference in St James’s Street and show what can be achieved.”
