After a triumphant premiere in March 2024 at one of Vienna’s most beloved comedy theatres, Dirty Old Women has taken Austria by storm—packing out venues and striking a powerful chord with audiences of all ages. The autobiographical one-act play, with cabaret flair and sitcom-style laughs, is now gaining international attention with invitations to perform in Slovakia, Barcelona, and Lisbon.
Created and performed by the fearless duo Jenny Simanowitz and Kathy Tanner, Dirty Old Women follows two women in their early seventies who decide to join a sex-positive dating site—not to find soulmates, but to reclaim joy, playfulness, and maybe a little erotic excitement. What unfolds is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud, and sometimes deeply touching exploration of aging, intimacy, and self-discovery.
“We’re constantly struck by how much it seems to mean to older women to see old age portrayed as a carefree, exciting adventure,” says Jenny, who lost her partner in 2020. “Now, we’re living our lives as an ongoing escapade—and thoroughly enjoying our age. It’s that spirit that seems to resonate, not just with older women, but with younger audiences too.”
Kathy, who has been divorced for many years, agrees: “There’s such liberation in embracing who we are now, without shame or fear. Our show is raw, funny, honest—and above all, joyful.”
