A child has been taken to hospital after a collision involving a car and a group of pedestrians at Brighton Marina on Tuesday afternoon. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 3pm following reports of a vehicle striking four people near the main retail area, prompting a significant response from police, paramedics and the fire service.
According to Sussex Police, the collision involved a single car and a group of four pedestrians, one of whom was a young child. The child sustained injuries that required immediate medical attention and was transported to hospital for further assessment. The extent of the injuries has not yet been confirmed, but officers described them as “serious enough to warrant urgent treatment”. The other three pedestrians suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle stopped immediately and is assisting police with their inquiries. No arrests have been made at this stage. Officers have said they are keeping “an open mind” about the circumstances leading up to the incident, and early indications suggest it may have been a tragic accident rather than a deliberate act.
Parts of the Marina were temporarily cordoned off while collision investigators examined the scene. Traffic was disrupted along the internal access roads as police conducted forensic work and collected CCTV footage from nearby businesses. Witnesses described the aftermath as “shocking”, with several bystanders rushing to help before emergency services arrived.
A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance Service said multiple ambulance crews attended alongside specialist paramedic units. The child was stabilised before being taken to hospital. “We responded to a serious road traffic incident involving pedestrians,” the spokesperson said. “Our crews treated several patients, including one child who required further care.”
Police are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage taken around the time of the collision. “We are working to establish the full sequence of events,” a Sussex Police spokesperson said. “If you saw what happened or have any video footage, please contact us as soon as possible.”
The Marina, one of Brighton’s busiest leisure and shopping destinations, gradually reopened to the public later in the afternoon once the investigation site was cleared. Officers have confirmed that there is no wider risk to the public.
