Barnum Brighton opened at Theatre Royal on 3 March 2026 — and from the very first moment, it was clear this would not be an ordinary evening at the theatre.
Barnum Brighton is a spectacle a true joy. It is theatre in its most exuberant form.
And yes – I found myself smiling like a child.
Barnum Brighton – Opening Night at Theatre Royal
Barnum tells the story of P.T. Barnum — showman, dreamer, risk-taker — and transforms the Theatre Royal Brighton stage into something far closer to a circus ring than a proscenium arch.
The production achieves something genuinely impressive: it recreates the energy and movement of a full-scale circus within the intimate space of one of Brighton’s most historic theatres.
On what is not a vast stage, the creative team has achieved scale. Through clever choreography, layered staging and bold visual design, the performance feels expansive, alive and constantly in motion. It is remarkable how much they fit into that space — without ever feeling cramped.
Costumes & Set Design
Visually, the show is striking.
Rich velvet reds, circus stripes, brass band uniforms, theatrical gowns — the costumes feel exuberant and meticulously detailed. Every character appears fully realised, from ringmaster to ensemble performer.
The set design is equally inventive: balconies, ropes, raised platforms and circus-inspired framing transform the Theatre Royal Brighton into Barnum’s world. Lighting plays a crucial role — warm carnival tones, dramatic spotlights and bursts of colour that heighten every number.
Immersive without overwhelming. Theatrical without excess.
A True Circus Atmosphere
This is not simply a musical about a circus.
At moments, it is a circus.
Physical theatre, acrobatic elements and stylised movement are woven throughout the performance, elevating it beyond traditional musical theatre staging. The audience gasps. Then laughs. Then applauds — often mid-scene.
The energy in the Theatre Royal Brighton auditorium on opening night was electric.
Opening Night — Theatre Royal Brighton
Theatre Royal Brighton has long been one of the city’s most important cultural venues. This production feels perfectly suited to its historic interior.
On 3 March, the audience responded with enthusiasm that built throughout the evening. By the finale, the entire auditorium was on its feet.
A standing ovation. Sustained applause. Genuine admiration.
Each musical number, each theatrical reveal was met with collective appreciation — the kind of shared delight that reminds you why live theatre matters. Why we sit together in the dark and watch stories unfold.
Performances & Emotion – Barnum Brighton
At its heart, Barnum is about ambition, imagination and belief in spectacle.
The lead performance carries the production with charisma and physical commitment. The ensemble work is tight, energetic and joyful — a cast that clearly understands the scale and tone of what they are delivering.
But what lingers most is the feeling.
This is a show that allows you to suspend cynicism. To enjoy spectacle without irony. To be entertained without reservation.
For two hours at Theatre Royal Brighton, you are not analysing. You are watching, applauding and smiling.
