Montreal duo – BIBI CLUB – are heading to BRIGHTON this week for appearances at The Great Escape on the 12th and 13th.
Building on the foundations they’d each laid as members of various other musical projects, singer-keyboardist Adèle Trottier-Rivard and guitarist Nicolas Basque formed Bibi Club in 2016. From the get-go the band have embraced minimalism, focusing on raw musical power rather than over-embellishing their sound.
The duo’s 2019 debut EP ‘Bibi Club’ showcased radical sonic exploration. Across four bold tracks, the band immediately established a musical language that was rooted in authenticity and individuality. Bibi Club have been attempting to push back space-time boundaries in their music ever since.
With a sound unique to the Montreal scene, the two-piece pluck inspiration from ‘70s post-punk New York bands like Arthur Russell, Talking Heads and Suicide, the West Coast spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane and the current experimental pop scene in England (Tirzah, Dean Blunt). The influence of radical movements on the pair is undeniable, but at their core Bibi Club convey a cosy sense of cheerfulness — something they describe as “living-room party music”.
Just in time for the warm weather, brighter days and joys of summer, the band are now set to unveil their debut album ‘Le soleil et la mer’. Like a faraway song floating in on the breeze through an open window, the band’s first full length LP is sun-kissed and wave-washed: arriving as a himmering, chic and long-overdue party.
