Residents and visitors alike will be given a warm welcome to the city centre this summer, thanks to the 500+ Brilliant Brighton businesses who come together to dress the city with colourful bunting, hanging baskets and artist-designed banners – adding further fun and colour to our city centre streets!
Following a call-out for local creatives to submit their designs for this year’s banners inspired by the brief ‘We Love Brighton’, earlier this year, Brighton illustrator Donough O’Malley was awarded the commission. His graphic artwork spanning iconic landmarks, joy-filled summer activities and a nod to the city’s pesky but beloved seagulls will be displayed high above Western Road, North Street, Bond Street and Market Street.
The artwork has been commissioned and organised by the 517 businesses who form Brilliant Brighton (also known as Brighton’s Business Improvement District), who each year aim to add extra vibrancy to the city centre streets, from early May through to September.

“People come to Brighton to have fun. It is a fun city after all. A bit cheeky too,” says Brighton illustrator and designer Donough O’Malley who has previously created artwork for Random House, Harper Collins and The V&A. “With my banner designs, I want to celebrate the traditional seaside appeal with banners featuring ice lollies and sticks of rock, to colourful carousels, as well as the unique fun that Brighton folk have, with a love of music, Pride, and roller disco parades through the city. I hope people enjoy them as they head into the city this summer!”
The banners are part of Brilliant Brighton’s dressing the city campaign, which aims to brighten up the city centre during the summer months for visitors, holidaymakers and residents alike to enjoy. The campaign also includes cheerful bunting displayed in North Laine and The Lanes and blooming floral hanging baskets.
“We love dressing the city centre each year with our bunting, floral displays and colourful banners – it really signals the start of the busy summer season!”, says Shelley Welti, Marketing and Events Manager for Brilliant Brighton. “Whether you’re heading into the city for Brighton Fringe and Festival events, or visiting our fantastic array of shops, bars, restaurants and salons, over the coming months, we hope that they make you smile and remind you of all there is to love about our brilliant city!”
