Two Police cars were damaged and part of the A23 in central Brighton had to be closed for several hours today, after a man started throwing tiles from the roof of the Brewdog pub in Grand Parade, Brighton.

Officers arrived at the scene in Grand Parade near the junction with Kingswood Street just before midnight last night (30 August).

Police negotiators worked throughout the night to try to get the man to come down from the roof of the building but to no avail.

This morning residents in the flats between Kingswood Street and Morley Street on Grand Parade were told to stay inside and keep away from windows until the situation was resolved, and the road was cordoned off to “protect the public”.

The resumption of building work was delayed in Circus Street, on the site of the old municipal fruit and veg market.

Sussex Police this morning via their Twitter account, stated, “We’re dealing with a man on a roof in Grand Parade #Brighton. Roof tiles thrown at officers, nobody injured. Southbound A23 closed between Richmond Parade and Edward St.”

The force added, “We appreciate everybody’s patience while we resolve the situation peacefully and without injury to anyone.”

During the 9 hour standoff with police, two police cars were damaged as the man threw tiles and other objects from the roof, but nobody was injured.

The nine-hour siege ended shortly after 9am, with the man agreeing to come down from the roof of the Brighton pub.

Sussex Police stated, “at 9.15am today (Friday 31st August) the man came down voluntarily after talking to officers, and was safely arrested without incident.”
