A Brighton restaurant manager is setting out on an extraordinary challenge this month, walking 365 miles across the country to raise vital funds for a charity that transforms the lives of children and young people with complex disabilities.

Joel Alves, 36, who manages Francisco Lounge on South Road, Haywards Heath, will lace up his hiking boots at 6am on Monday, June 23, departing from Modelo Lounge in Hove. His destination? Martino Lounge in Newcastle upon Tyne — the two Lounge restaurants furthest apart in the UK.

Spanning seven days and 365 solo miles, Joel’s journey will support Chailey Heritage Foundation, a leading East Sussex charity dedicated to empowering children and young adults with complex physical disabilities.

“I was determined to do something that would really test me,” Joel shared. “My tough teenage years in Brixton made me want to give back to the community. When I toured Chailey Heritage, it was unbelievable to see the incredible work they do.”

The cause is especially close to Joel’s heart: his assistant manager Joe Murphy’s 17-year-old son, Sam, attends Chailey Heritage Foundation. Joel added, “I’m a keen hiker, but honestly, I’m panicking now. I keep asking myself how I’ll actually do it. My girlfriend once ran the London Marathon after eating a packet of Pringles with no training — so that’s my inspiration!”

Armed with a tent and sheer determination, Joel has mapped out overnight stops in cities including London and Cambridge as he makes his way north.

Throughout June, Francisco Lounge has been rallying support with a series of fundraising events — from quiz nights and bingo to bake sales, kids’ cake decorating, and crafts with princesses — all in aid of Chailey Heritage Foundation.

Gareth Germer, Chief Executive of Chailey Heritage Foundation, praised Joel’s commitment: “We are delighted that Joel has chosen to support us on what will be a brave and challenging solo walk. It was a pleasure for colleagues to welcome him to Chailey Heritage last week, and we look forward to welcoming him back after he completes the 365 miles.”

Chailey Heritage Foundation provides specialist education, care, and transition services for children and young people with complex disabilities, helping them pursue their fullest potential.
