Brighton and Hove Albion have agreed to sell Italian defender Diego Coppola to newly promoted Ligue 1 side Paris FC in a deal worth up to €20 million, according to multiple reports including transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano and French daily Le Parisien.

The structure is €18 million up front, with a further €2 million in performance-related bonuses. The 22-year-old centre-back is expected to sign a five-year contract in the French capital, running to June 2031.

A textbook Brighton deal

The numbers explain why the Seagulls did it. Brighton signed Coppola from Hellas Verona in the summer of 2025 for around €11 million. He made just nine appearances for the club, though he did contribute two assists from defence — no small thing for a centre-half.

In January he went to Paris FC on loan, where he made 14 appearances under Stéphane Gilli and then Antoine Kombouaré, and settled quickly. Lazio were reported to be monitoring him for a return to Serie A. Instead, Coppola made clear he wanted to stay in Paris, and the French club moved to make it permanent.

The result is a profit of roughly €9 million on a player who barely featured in the Premier League. That is the Brighton model working exactly as designed: buy young, develop, sell at a premium, reinvest.

The Brighton Connection

There is a neat symmetry to it. Paris FC have just appointed Liam Rosenior as head coach, replacing Kombouaré. Rosenior has his own Brighton connections, having come through the club as a player before a career that took him through Hull, Derby, Strasbourg and most recently Chelsea.

For Brighton, the sale frees up squad space and funds as the summer window develops. For supporters, the sting is familiar — another promising defender leaves before really being seen at the Amex — but the ledger is hard to argue with.

Coppola is now expected to complete the formalities before being unveiled by Paris FC.
