Brighton to Host a First-of-its-Kind Social Coherence Experiment

At a time when communities across the UK are becoming increasingly divided by politics, social issues and online outrage, Brighton will host an unusual public experiment with a simple but thought-provoking question:

What could happen if 88 people came together—not to protest against something—but to intentionally cultivate peace through music, movement, breath and shared intention?

On Saturday 8 August, Rosanna “RozyGlow” Hanness, founder of the StarPeace Movement and bestselling author of StarPeace 101: How to Create Peace in ONE Generation, will host the world’s first StarPeace Dance 4 Peace at the Brighton Unitarian Church.

Described as part conscious club night, part collective coherence experiment and part Lion’s Gate celebration, the four-hour event combines uplifting DJ sets, breathwork, ceremonial cacao, simple shared movement and moments of collective intention through visualisation, group singing whilst moving in unison to harmonise individuals into a collective frequency.

The event draws inspiration from decades of research exploring collective meditation, intention and social coherence, including studies commonly associated with the Maharishi Effect, Lynn McTaggart’s Intention Experiments and other work examining the effects of groups focusing on a shared intention. Rather than attempting to replicate those studies, Dance 4 Peace asks a different question:

What happens when those same principles are explored through joy, music and movement?

“The world has become very good at bringing people together around what they’re against,” says Hanness.

“I’m curious what could happen if we intentionally gathered around what we’re for.

Not to ignore the challenges we face, but to remember that peace also deserves our attention.

We don’t claim to know what will happen. That’s exactly why we’re exploring it together.”

The launch has intentionally been limited to 88 participants, known as The Original 88, symbolising the first people to help explore this new approach to collective peace-building.

If the extended Maharishi Effect proved to apply in this context, when 88 people come together in coherence, the square-root-of-one-percent principle connects that gathering with a population of 774,400 people. That is almost three times the population of Brighton and Hove, creating a symbolic field that reaches far beyond the city, east through Peacehaven and Newhaven, west through Shoreham and Worthing, and north beyond Patcham, Hassocks and Burgess Hill. This is not simply a Brighton gathering. It carries the population-scale potential of an entire region.

Brighton was chosen as the launch city because of its longstanding reputation for creativity, diversity and community, with the intention that successful gatherings will eventually expand to other towns, cities and countries.

Organisers have introduced tiered ticket pricing to make the event as accessible as possible, with Pay It Forward, Standard, Supported and Community ticket options, alongside a limited number of volunteer and donation-supported places for those who would otherwise be unable to attend.

“This isn’t about filling a venue,” says Hanness.

“It’s about beginning something together.”

With just over a week until the launch, organisers are inviting Brighton residents and visitors from across the UK to become part of what they hope will be the first chapter of a global movement.
