The Council of Brighton and Hove has contacted the government regarding the ‘unfair’ national funding system for nurseries. Brighton and Hove nurseries are suffering due to the low budgeting and funding it gets and the council is here to help them send a message to the government.
The letter was sent by the chair of the council’s children, young people and skills committee, Councillor Nick Childs.
‘Nurseries in Brighton & Hove are suffering because of an unfair government funding system that’s simply not fit for purpose’.
‘The funding rate we get from central government is well below average and does not take account of the high costs of running a nursery in Brighton & Hove’.

According to Nick Childs, the government does not take into account the high costs of living in Brighton and Hove considering that the prices here are the equivalent to London prices. The chair of council’s children committee believes that other cities such as Southampton, Reading, and Bristol get more funding per child then Brighton & Hove.
‘Bristol gets £5.69 per child. Reading gets £5.14 and Southampton gets £5.11 per child’
‘It is upsetting that the government is selling families in the city short with a funding system that is fundamentally so unfair’.
The chair admits that Brighton and Hove get £4.45 per child which is the lowest rate in the south east. The nurseries are struggling, and the government should help reduce the struggle by reviewing the current funding and budgeting system, making sure that every city in England has a fair chance at running its nurseries well.
