Danny Welbeck’s fifth goal of the season secured a smash-and-grab 1-0 victory for Brighton over Newcastle, earning the Seagulls another valuable three points in the Premier League.
Welbeck’s decisive strike came in the 35th minute, against the run of play, as Newcastle dominated much of the match but failed to convert their chances. Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen delivered a standout performance, making crucial saves to deny Eddie Howe’s side and ensure his team walked away with the win.
However, Brighton’s victory was marred by Welbeck’s injury. The striker was carried off on a stretcher after taking a hit to the back from Fabian Schär, raising concerns about his fitness.
Evan Ferguson, making his first Premier League start of the season, battled hard but couldn’t end his year-long goal drought for club and country. Ferguson, who has been gradually recovering from ankle surgery earlier this year, was replaced by Kaoru Mitoma after 60 minutes.
