Brighton is about to uncover one of its best-kept secrets. Underworld, a captivating exhibition at Phoenix Art Space, delves into the hidden history of the underground spaces beneath Brighton Railway Station, including the mysterious Cab Road tunnel.
A Victorian Marvel Rediscovered
Built in 1841 as a passageway for horse-drawn cabs, the Cab Road tunnel is a little-known piece of Brighton’s past. While its use has faded, its stories endure, sparking intrigue among locals and visitors alike. Underworld shines a spotlight on these subterranean spaces, offering a rare glimpse into the city’s Victorian-era infrastructure and the lives it touched.
Through this exhibition, visitors will journey into a forgotten world beneath Brighton’s bustling streets, uncovering the enigmatic stories that have remained hidden for decades.
A Community-Driven Exploration
Between October 2024 and January 2025, a team of dedicated volunteer researchers, led by esteemed Brighton historian Jackie Marsh-Hobbs, embarked on a mission to unearth the station’s untold history. This project included walking tours, interactive workshops, and archival research, resulting in a treasure trove of discoveries that form the foundation of the Underworld exhibition.
Their work has also created a digital archive, preserving these findings for future generations and providing a comprehensive look at the Cab Road tunnel’s historical significance.
