The Flat season is heading towards its most exciting stage, with some of the biggest meetings in the horse-racing calendar coming up over the next few weeks.

For racing fans who like to bet on horse racing, the autumn programme offers plenty of opportunities to study the form, assess the runners and consider the market. Whether you prefer to back the favourite, look for an outsider or simply enjoy following the biggest races of the season, there is no shortage of high-quality action to get excited about.

From the glamour of ParisLongchamp to the international spectacle of the Breeders’ Cup, here are five major meetings to keep firmly on the radar.

1. Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend – October 3-4

Few weekends in horse racing can match the prestige of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, with ParisLongchamp once again preparing to welcome some of the best horses from across the globe.

Taking place on October 3 and 4, the weekend culminates with the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on the Sunday. The race is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious Flat contests and attracts leading horses, jockeys and trainers from across Europe and beyond.

The Arc itself will naturally dominate the headlines, but the entire weekend provides a feast of high-class racing. With international reputations and major prizes on the line, it is one of the first major autumn meetings that racing fans should have circled.

2. Sun Chariot Day – October 3

Newmarket gets its turn in the spotlight on October 3 with Sun Chariot Day.

The feature race is the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes, a prestigious contest for fillies and mares over the Rowley Mile. It regularly attracts high-quality performers and can provide a fascinating battle between established stars and horses looking to cement their reputation at the highest level.

With the meeting taking place on the same weekend as the Arc, October 3 promises to be an especially busy day for Flat-racing fans.

3. Future Champions Festival – October 9-10

Newmarket returns to centre stage just a week later for the Future Champions Festival, taking place on October 9 and 10.

The two-day meeting is one of the most important fixtures of the season for identifying potential stars of the future. Several Group 1 contests feature across the weekend, with the programme providing an opportunity to see some of the leading two-year-olds before they potentially embark on Classic campaigns the following season.

For fans who enjoy trying to identify the next generation of stars, this is a meeting that deserves particular attention.

4. QIPCO British Champions Day – October 17

Just a week after the Future Champions Festival, attention turns to Ascot for QIPCO British Champions Day.

Taking place on Saturday, October 17, the meeting brings together many of the leading horses from the Flat season for one final showdown. Five Group 1 races headline the card, with more than £4 million in prize money available.

It is traditionally one of the biggest days of the British Flat season, offering an opportunity for champions to round off their campaigns in style while others attempt to end the year with a career-defining victory.

5. Breeders’ Cup World Championships – October 30-31

The autumn action eventually moves across the Atlantic for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Keeneland on October 30 and 31.

The two-day spectacle brings together elite horses from around the world, with championship races covering a range of distances and surfaces. Keeneland will host the Breeders’ Cup for the fourth time, adding another international dimension to an already outstanding autumn racing schedule.

For European racing fans, the Breeders’ Cup provides one final opportunity to see some of the season’s biggest stars compete on the world stage.

With the Arc, Sun Chariot, Future Champions Festival, British Champions Day and Breeders’ Cup all taking place within the space of just four weeks, October promises to be one of the most exciting periods of the Flat-racing calendar.

The big question is which horses will emerge from this remarkable run of meetings with their reputations enhanced, and which stars will sign off their seasons with a victory to remember?
