The Big Garden Birdwatch is an annual event that encourages people across the UK to count the birds they see in their garden over a certain period, so that the RSPB might create an impression of Britain’s wildlife levels. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds bases its conservation work on a strong analysis of the threats facing birds. This knowledge allows them to take the necessary steps to preserve our landscape, through species protection or land management.

Last year more than half a million people took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch, with over eight million birds sighted. 2017 saw a significant increase in blackbirds, robins and goldfinches, but simultaneously a decrease in chaffinches and greenfinches. It is imperative that we continue to monitor these figures and maintain an awareness of wildlife levels so that organisations like the RSPB can continue to protect the wonderfully diverse wildlife of the UK.

You can find the event at St Anne’s Well Gardens, 5 Furze Hill, Hove. For more details visit the RSPB website.

If you’re interested in taking part in the Big Garden Birdwatch you can request your free participation pack from the RSPB here.
