For this Frive review, a box of the UK meal-prep service landed on our table with six chef-made dishes to put to the test — and the short version is that it impressed us. Frive promises fresh, restaurant-quality meals you heat in minutes, and across lamb, beef, chicken, king prawns and two kinds of fish, it largely delivered on that promise. Overall, this Frive review highlights how it truly delivers on its promises.
In our Frive review, we also noticed the attention to quality and flavour in each meal.
What is Frive?
Frive bills itself as the UK’s highest-rated meal-prep delivery service. According to the brand, the meals are chef-crafted and nutritionist-approved, made with whole foods and free from artificial ingredients and ultra-processed ingredients (UPFs). Each dish is portion-controlled — Frive lists meals in the 400–650 kcal range — macro-balanced and high in protein, and ready in around three minutes in the microwave. It runs as a weekly subscription you can pause or cancel, with a rotating menu of 40-plus dishes, and every tub carries full nutritional information plus a scan code that logs the meal straight into MyFitnessPal.
This Frive review shows that the meals are designed to suit various dietary needs and preferences.
The story behind Frive
Frive didn’t start life as Frive. The business launched back in 2016 as Lions Prep, founded by George Taylor, who began by cooking and hand-delivering meals himself from his one-bedroom flat. The goal was simple: help busy people eat better without the burden of meal prep, and without compromising on taste. Aimed first at gym-goers and the fitness crowd, it grew into a nationwide service that has since delivered millions of chef-cooked meals.
In 2024 the company rebranded as Frive — short for “food to thrive” — to open that same idea up to a much wider audience, from shift-working nurses to time-poor parents. The mission stayed the same: real, whole-food meals, free from ultra-processed ingredients, made genuinely convenient. Knowing that it grew from one person cooking out of a small kitchen makes the home-cooked quality of the meals land a little differently.
What was in our box
As noted in our Frive review, the variety in the meal options is impressive.
The line-up was a proper globe-trot, covering a lot of ground in a single delivery:
Harissa Lamb Chickpea Stew with lemon and herb potatoes and green beans
Our Frive review found that each of these dishes is crafted with care and attention to detail.
- Smoky Tomato Basa with sweet potatoes and cherry tomatoes
- Steamed Sea Bass Green Thai Curry with sticky rice and green beans
- Grilled Beef Burger with roast potatoes, a pepper and onion medley, sweet corn salsa and tomato relish
- Chicken Puttanesca Rigatoni with a basil roasted vegetable medley
- Chilli Lemon Garlic King Prawns with roast potatoes and tomatoes
North African, Thai, Italian and classic British comfort food in one box — a refreshing change from the chicken-and-rice monotony some meal-prep services fall into.
Delivery and packaging
Delivery was prompt, and everything arrived in an insulated box packed with ice packs, keeping the meals properly chilled on the doorstep — no small thing in the current heatwave. Any dishes you won’t get to before the use-by date can go straight into the freezer for up to 28 days, so you can keep part of the box as a back-up for busier weeks.
How the meals tasted
This is where Frive won us over. The portions are generous, the food tastes genuinely fresh, and — crucially — it holds up: even the meals we froze and defrosted came out tasting good, with the kind of flavour you’d expect from something cooked at home rather than reheated from a tub.
Ultimately, this Frive review confirms that the meals are both delicious and satisfying.
The real strength, though, is the variety. Rotating between a harissa lamb stew, a Thai sea bass curry, garlic king prawns and a proper beef burger keeps eating well feeling like a pleasure rather than a chore — which, for anyone who finds healthy eating a slog, is half the battle won.
The variety keeps our Frive review positive and highlights the service’s strengths.
The final verdict on this meal service
On the strength of this box, Frive does what it sets out to do: fresh, home-tasting, well-portioned meals with enough variety to keep a week interesting, delivered and ready in minutes. If your weeks are busy and cooking from scratch keeps slipping down the list, it’s a genuinely convenient way to eat well without resorting to beige freezer food.
This Frive review ultimately showcases how convenient and enjoyable meal prep can be.
