A canal boat, the open sea, and a life lived far from convention — comedian Joel Sanders brings his uniquely nautical comedy show Angry Boater to the Brighton Komedia on Tuesday, 17th June 2025, launching his first official UK tour.

Sanders, whose unconventional journey has seen him live aboard a canal boat for the past 15 years, shot to national attention after Channel 4 featured his life and exploits on both series of the hit show Narrow Escapes. His daring night-time voyage taking a narrowboat onto the sea will air in episodes set to broadcast on 4th, 5th, and 6th June.

Before life on the water, Sanders was a fixture on the US comedy circuit, playing everything from Deep South dive bars to Las Vegas casinos in a bid to become the first British comic to perform in all 50 US states — he made it to 40. Along the way, he shared stages with legends including Robin Williams.

Angry Boater — his critically acclaimed, self-penned show — blends stand-up comedy with storytelling, weaving tales of misadventure, maritime mishaps, and life in the slow lane. What began as a spontaneous series of gigs near wherever his boat happened to be moored has now grown into a nationwide tour, with Brighton as the very first stop.
