The 2022 Flat season has come to an end at Brighton Racecourse, so now is a good time to reflect on the last 12 months. Here is a look at two trainers who have had the most success, and two horses that have shone on the south coast venue.
Leading Trainers
Marcus Tregoning
With four winners from seven runners, trainer Marcus Tregoning had an excellent strike rate of 57% in 2022. The experienced handler has had some excellent horses in his yard over the years, and although he doesn’t have anywhere near as many runners as he used to, he has shown he can still have a lot of success.

Tregoning will be hoping he can produce another Derby winner in 2023. His Sea The Stars colt, Muktamil, has an entry in the race at Epsom, but he is likely to have it all to do. Auguste Rodin, the 3/1 favourite in the betting, has been one of the best horse racing tips for today in the latest ante-post market for the British Classic ever since he won the 2022 Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster.
We could see one of Tregoning’s Derby contenders at Brighton before the 2023 Derby, as the course is seen as perfect preparation for what they will encounter on the Downs in Surrey.
Tony Carroll
No trainer had more winners than Tony Carroll at Brighton in 2022. The Dual-purpose operator recorded 15 winners at the track, which was more than double the tally of any other trainer.
Carroll enjoys taking his horses down to Brighton, as he is a big supporter of the course. Over the last five years, he has had 53 winners. Again, that is double the number of any of his rivals.
Expect to see Carroll among the winners regularly again in 2023 as his yard is increasing all the time.
Leading Horses
Silver Bubble
Four-year-old filly Silver Bubble has enjoyed herself at Brighton this season, with four wins from five appearances here. She recorded her first success back in June when she was rated at 48. At the end of the campaign, she had moved up to a mark of 61.

The daughter of Mayson scored in a handicap contest on her final outing of the year. She was slowly away in that race, but she finished very strongly for a two-length margin of victory. Her trainer Gay Kelleway, whose stable is based in Newmarket, will have been delighted by what her filly produced in 2022.
Wisper
Wisper made three appearances at Brighton this season, and she was successful each time. Tregoning, who won the Derby in 1996, entered his filly at Brighton back in May where she scored on her seasonal reappearance. She then stepped up in class in July, winning by six lengths, while in August, she claimed her hat trick in a handicap contest over 1m2f.
The multiple Brighton winner began 2022 with an official rating of 58. She has shot up to a mark of 82 now, which is some climb up the standings. Her latest performance at Windsor, where she finished second of 10 runners, suggests there could be much more to come from her next season.
The 2023 Flat season at Brighton begins on the 22nd of April with a seven-race card. Hopefully, that meeting will produce some horses who have Classic credentials in their respective divisions.
