We met Clifford sitting at lunch time in Old Steine, enjoying the sun and reading a newspaper. We had a quick chat about how he got in Brighton.
Hi Cliff, nice to meet you. Could you tell us a little bit about you? Well, I’m 73 years old. I’m an inventor, design engineer and Conceptologist.
Is there something you are interested around Brighton? I’m rather intrigued with the idea that was in the paper just yesterday, about Brighton being equivalent to Monaco, being an independent state within England. I’m intrigued, I like that. We like quirky things.
So, have you lived here all your life? No, I came here when I was about 25 years old. I’ve been here most of my life.
What made you choose Brighton? I came here to marry somebody. My wife came from long way from north and we came in here, settled here and I started a business here.
Every time the same question comes out: Brighton or London? Well, I like London, but London is so huge. Some parts of London are interesting and some parts are terrible. But I like Brighton. This is where I am and this is where my business interests are.
In your opinion, where is the favourite Brightonians place? I look around, especially in the evenings and I see all the young people enjoying themselves on the beach at the sea front, drinking beer and laughing. It seems to me as they having a good time. I think I should be a youngster again!
