When Jordan Brown started her blog, HelloMissJordan, back in January 2014 while she was studying for her BA at Sussex University she didn’t expect it to transform her life completely. What started out as somewhere to collect and keep thoughts has snowballed into something much bigger. She’s now amassed a huge following of thousands of people swooning over her adorable dog, her many travels, and her enviable wardrobe. We chatted to her on the third anniversary of her blog to find out what being a blogger is really like behind the scenes.
A career in social media has recently come calling for 23-year-old Jordan, who is currently juggling working part-time and blogging part-time. Her lifestyle includes freebies, photoshoots, and jetting off to Paris, something countless teenage girls across the country are doubtless dreaming of. But how can they get their wish? The answer is consistency and dedication, according to Jordan. “Just do it and stick with it,” she said. “I know so many people who have asked me for advice about this and these would definitely be my words of wisdom! A lot of people start blogs ‘for the freebies’ but it takes so much work that they really aren’t free. Start sooner rather than later and put your all into it. If you’re passionate about it then people will see it!”
Insta-lover Jordan has more than 8,800 Instagram followers and 6,600 Twitter followers, but her biggest fans are her family and friends: “When I went into blogging. everyone was honestly so supportive. I don’t think I’ve had a single person say a bad thing about it, which makes me feel very lucky! My parents are my single biggest help when it comes to my blog and I honestly don’t think I could do it without them. They do everything from dropping me to the train station to taking outfit photos to looking after Oscar.”
The antics of Oscar, Jordan’s loveable The West Highland White Terrier, raise many a smile. Jordan was given Oscar when he was just a puppy, and the pair have been inseparable for the past two years. “I always say he’s like my animal sidekick from a Disney movie because he has such a personality and my home always feels empty when he’s not there,” said Jordan. “He’s become so well behaved as he’s grown up and I honestly couldn’t imagine life without him!”
But even the cutest pet isn’t enough to set a blogger apart in the ever more densely populated world of social media. Jordan says her ‘everyday princess’ style which sets her apart. Her outfits tend to be girlie yet quirky with a laid-back feel, and include a lot of soft pink hues and all things fluffy, floaty, and tulle. ” I’m definitely one for a quirky piece of clothing or something that people wouldn’t normally go out during the day in,” says Jordan. “I hope my style inspires others to wear whatever they want and love without feeling embarrassed!”
We start to wrap up our talk by reminiscing about memories of Brighton, which was Jordan’s home for several years and is the birthplace of her blog. She’s recently had to move away and said she misses living near the sea and the amazing Brightonian restaurants you can’t find anywhere else. She can well and truly picture herself returning to once again grace London-by-the-sea with her presence: “Brighton is such a beautiful city and if the opportunity ever arose to go back I 100 per cent would.”
Lastly, we asked Jordan for her big message for the world, which she said was ‘be yourself’. “There have been so many times where I’ve wished I was someone else or disliked the way I am, but I’ve reached a point now where I think, ‘you know what? I blooming love me, and I’m going to be the best version of me I can be!'”
