January is often dismissed as a quiet month for retail, but at Snoopers Paradise, it is when some of the most interesting stock quietly comes to the surface.
As January settles in, dealers across the building use the post-Christmas lull to reset their spaces, refresh displays, and bring out more collectible or specialist pieces that don’t always suit the gift-led atmosphere of December. The result is a noticeable shift in both stock and shopper behaviour that becomes more apparent as the month progresses.
“In January, I always stock my more collectible items. January is for the dedicated Snooper,” says Sarah, a vintage dealer at Snoopers Paradise.
Laurie, who runs the Vintage Photo Booth, adds: “In January, I always use the quieter time to give the booth a zhuzh.”
Dealers report that by mid-January, the audience shifts towards collectors, browsers, and locals taking more time to explore, whether that’s refreshing their homes or leaning into personal interests and hobbies for the year ahead.
Caron, a dealer specialising in vintage trinkets and homeware, explains: “In January, I always clear old stock and refresh the stall. Homeware sells well as people update their homes after Christmas.”
For specialist collectors, the month is particularly significant. Wayne, a vintage nostalgia dealer focusing on dolls, teddy bears, and toys, says: “In January, I always put out more collectible pieces to interest serious collectors.”
Rather than being driven by sales or seasonal promotions, January at Snoopers Paradise is shaped by timing and intent. Dealers have space to experiment, shoppers have time to browse, and long-standing visitors know this is when stalls change most visibly.
It may be quieter on the surface, but for those in the know, January remains one of the most rewarding times to explore Brighton’s largest indoor market.
