They are the two biggest institutions in Brighton when it comes to giving people access to creative and cultural experience, the Brighton Dome charity and the Brighton and Hove city council’s Music & Arts department. From the 1st of July on, they will join forces to create a new city-wide hub for creative and cultural learning.

At the moment, they are still operating separately with the Brighton Dome charity being charged with organizing the annual Brighton Festival as well as other charity events throughout the year, while Brighton and Hove Music & Arts is specialized in providing a wide range of cultural and creative activities for children and young people in the area.

The transfer of Brighton and Hove Music & Arts department to join forces with Brighton Dome has been warmly welcomed on both sides. Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival Chief Executive, Andrew Comben, says: “This is a really exciting opportunity for us to extend the work that we already do with children, young people, schools and the wider community and to play a central role in the cultural learning of the whole city.”

“Having one of the country’s most celebrated music services connected to us directly in this way provides us with a fantastic chance to not only become a center for cultural learning but also to connect up artists, audiences, and children in their creative work.”

His excitement is reflected by the Brighton & Hove City Council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee. Councillor Dan Chapman is especially delighted about the new funding options that weren’t possible while the department was under council control. Being linked to what he calls “the wider arts and cultural scene in the city“, the service could also see a significant expansion of its initiatives all across the city.
