The multi-use games area (MUGA) at Withdean Sports Complex has re-opened after being given a new lease of life.

Over the summer, the pitch has been completely refurbished, offering a modern, secure and accessible facility.

The previously underused MUGA now supports a wide range of sports including tennis, netball, basketball and pickleball, as well as providing an enhanced and safer space for the community to enjoy.

Freedom Leisure, which runs Withdean Sports Complex on behalf of the council, is now taking bookings for the updated facility.

The refurbishment work, which came in under budget and was carried out by ETC Sports Surfaces, has included:

  • Laying a new porous tarmac surface with improved drainage
  •  Line marking for tennis, pickleball, netball and 3X3 basketball.
  • Upgraded fencing around the perimeter of the court to improve security
  • Installation of new energy efficient LED floodlighting
  • Improving court accessibility with a level access entrance

Councillor Alan Robins, Cabinet Member for Sports, Recreation and Libraries, said: “It’s fantastic to see the transformation of the multi-use games area at Withdean Sports Complex, which now offers a wider range of activities for residents, community groups and sports clubs.

“The refurbished facility will not only provide a new and improved playing surface, but also improved safety and accessibility for all.”

The improvements are part of the council’s commitment to improve sports facilities in the city and provide opportunities for residents to get active, set out in the Sports Facilities Investment Plan.

Other current projects include exciting plans for a new community swimming pool at Withdean Sports Complex and the proposed redevelopment of the King Alfred Leisure Centre on Hove seafront.
