A pedestrian sadly died last night after being hit by a car involved in a police chase. Officers are still collecting evidence from the scene, so commuters this morning faced chaos on the roads as Old Steine was cordoned off in the southbound direction.

The Vauxhall Astra failed to stop for police last night (Tuesday 10 January) in the Bear Road area and then was chased into the city centre, colliding with the pedestrian in St. James’s Street.  The pedestrian died at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and police are now appealing for information to trace the driver, who has not yet been found or named. The car kept on driving after the fatal accident and was later found abandoned on Madiera Drive near Concorde 2.

Any witnesses or those with any other information should call Sussex Police on 101 or email [email protected] quoting serial number 1346 of 10/01.
