Many commuters were left in the dark this morning as they were hit with a deluge of disruptions.

With ticket machines at the station being out of order and reports that no staff members were available this morning to help alleviate the frustrations of commuters who found themselves unable to board trains, many of which underwent delay and cancellation.

One commuter said “it’s unacceptable, I need a service that I can rely on to get me to work and Southern have simply not delivered one for a long time now”

Southern Rail are yet to comment directly on the disruption, being unresponsive regarding our contact, but have released this short explanation on their site:

“An operational incident at Brighton is causing disruption to services running through this station. Train services running to and from this station may be cancelled or delayed by up to 10 minutes. Disruption is expected until 12:00.”

Whilst services are now pretty much back on track, with a few cancellations and delays still coming through, trust in Southern Rail’s ability to deliver consistency is dwindling. The company stated, in relation to this morning’s disruptions;

“Earlier today Southern had an operational incident with one of their trains at Brighton Station. Platform 7 was closed whilst Network Rail investigated the incident. The investigation has now finished and Platform 7 has now re-opened.

They are now working hard to restore their trains services timetable as quickly as possible. Whilst this is ongoing some services may still be subject to delays and short notice alterations.

Ticket acceptance with Brighton and Hove Buses between Brighton / Lewes and Eastbourne will stay in place until services start to return to normal.”

If you were personally affected by this morning’s disruptions then you may be eligible for compensation, just make sure that you keep hold of your train ticket and make a note of the details of your journey as both of these will be required to support your claim.

Be sure to check Southern Rail timetables if you’re planning a journey today because some train departures are still being cancelled.
