This week our Chancellor George Osborne revealed his shiny new budget to the country which was met with collective groans and several newly drafted petitions to stop whatever the Chancellor was hoping to impose. Council leader Warren Morgan warned today that the budget could cost our beloved Brighton and Hove £200 million. Now, we Brightonians are not ones to keep quiet and when we don’t like something, you will definitely know about it and next month Brighton will play host to the Anti-Austerity Festival, because festivals are one of the things Brighton does best.

The 99% Festival is a two-day festival taking place at the Synergy Centre in Brighton which coincides with the national March for Health, Homes, Jobs and Education – End Austerity Now taking place on Saturday 16th April. The weekend will be full of live performances, speakers and debates. Hosted by the Big Revolutions and Brighton People’s Assembly Against Austerity, Saturday evening will be a night of music, dance, poets and DJs all in order to raise money for local campaigns. From the likes of Fable, Meow Meows and Dancing Queer, what better way to fight austerity measures than to party?

Author Jonathan Neale will be at the event on the Sunday

The Sunday of the festival will be focused on ‘Ousting Austerity’ and will focus on themes such as housing, health, climate change, local cuts and national/international economics. Food will be provided by the Real Junk Food Project and the tickets are free for the Sunday event. Listen to talks such as ‘London, the money laundering capital of the world’ with Nick Kochan, ‘Murder by austerity’ with Kerry Anne Mendoza, the Editor-in-Chief of The Canary and hear from Jonathan Neale, the author of ‘Stop Global Warming – Change the World’ and the editor of ‘One Million Climate Jobs’. The afternoon aims to debunk myths and explore alternative solutions. To buy tickets for the event click here.
