Theatre Royal Brighton – 1st – 5th April 2025

4 stars

Calamity Jane rides into the Theatre Royal Brighton, bringing good old-fashioned Wild West fun. Based on the classic Doris Day film, this iconic musical is packed with toe-tapping tunes, sharp humour and a lot of heart.

Gun slingin’ Calamity Jane has the biggest mouth in Dakota territory and is always up for a fight. But when the men of Deadwood fall hard for a Chicago stage star, Calamity struggles to keep her jealousy holstered.

Carrie Hope Fletcher steps into Calamity’s boots with a powerful performance that’s feisty, funny and endearing. Despite her bravado and bragging, there’s a vulnerability that makes her impossible not to root for.

Her vocals are absolutely stunning. The show doesn’t always give her the chance to unleash the full power of her voice but when she hits the emotional high point of Secret Love, every note is amazing.

Vinny Coyle’s Wild Bill Hickok is the perfect counterbalance to Fletcher’s performance. He brings charisma, a rich baritone voice and plenty of spark to their onstage chemistry. Their playful duet I Can Do Without You is a highlight, full of quick wit and tension.

The supporting cast is strong. Seren Sandham-Davies is a delight as the ambitious Katie Brown and Luke Wilson brings depth and a gorgeous voice to Lieutenant Danny. The multi-talented ensemble also play instruments live on stage, adding to the immersive feel of the show.

Visually, it’s clever and creative with simple set pieces transforming in fun and surprising ways. Classic numbers like The Deadwood Stage and The Black Hills of Dakota get the audience singing along, adding to the feel-good atmosphere.

The story may be on the thin side and some of its old-fashioned ideas don’t quite get the modern refresh they could, but the energy and talent of the cast more than make up for it. Judging by the standing ovation, the audience agrees.
