Brighton & Hove City Council’s new small business ambassador will host regular surgeries in Jubilee Library as he looks to build a strong dialogue with business owners and entrepreneurs.

Councillor Mohammed Asaduzzaman has stepped into the role after a year as the mayor of Brighton & Hove and is determined to work with small businesses across the city to better understand their challenges.

With that in mind, Councillor Asaduzzaman will be holding bi-monthly surgeries in Jubilee Library, the first of which will take place on Thursday 14 August.

The surgery begins at 12pm and there are still some slots available to book via Eventbrite.

Councillor Asaduzzaman said: “As someone who has served this city both as a civic leader and now as small business ambassador, I’ve had the privilege of working directly with the people who power our communities.

“From local shops to market traders and those running our beloved festivals, these small businesses are more than just economic units – they are cultural contributors, employers and anchors of trust on our high streets.

“They are the foundation of our local economy and identity.

“Brighton & Hove is known for its independence, creativity and community values. That spirit starts with our small businesses and it’s our responsibility to ensure they have a voice in shaping our city’s future.

“As the region moves towards devolution, we want to make sure our independent businesses can harness the potential benefits.”

Councillor Asaduzzaman’s appointment as small business ambassador builds on the council’s existing support for city businesses.

Successful initiatives include the Business & Intellectual Property Centre and the Brighton & Hove Growth Hub, which links directly to the new national Business Growth Service launched recently by national government.
