BRIGHTON, 4 November 2026, Wach’Art CIC welcomes Marije Brom back to Brighton for The Weight of Stillness, an exhibition of richly layered abstract paintings exploring memory, vulnerability, resilience and the freedom that can come from letting go.
Her previous exhibition at The Lab, Rest Is a Revolution and Joy Is a Scar, brought together two decades of artistic practice and a personal journey through living with lupus and reclaiming a sense of self. Friends and family joined the occasion, some bringing paintings she had gifted them years before, transforming the exhibition into a moment of reconnection.
WACH’ART CIC
In this new body of work, intuitive abstraction, contrasting colours and textured surfaces allow darkness and light to coexist. The more luminous palette suggests not forgetting what has been endured, but finding a different relationship with it.
“Stillness can be heavy. But it can also be where freedom begins.” – Marije Brom
As Marije writes in her artist statement: “My work is not about erasing the past, but about finding a different relationship with it.” Her practice also draws on a professional background in law.
