We all know Brighton is renowned for being inclusive. It caters for vegetarians and vegans but what about those who are gluten free? They may be coeliac, gluten-intolerant or just trying to live a healthier lifestyle. Despite the increase in Gluten-Free options available it is still a misconception that gluten-free food isn’t tasty!  So we looked into where you can get the best gluten free cakes and goodies in Brighton. So good that you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

5. Zizzi

Zizzi’s comes in at 5 because I wanted to put down a good option for dinner and dessert. Their gluten free menu is quite extensive in comparison to other chain restaurants, but one of their deserts is of particular note. Their chocolate praline and sea salt torte is an absolutely divine option. To make this dessert even better it is completely vegan and dairy free!

4. Berkson Bakes

Often seen at community festivals in Brighton, Berkson Bakes is an amazing place to get gluten free cakes and treats. Sarah Berkson who is coeliac wanted to make sure that others like her weren’t missing out. She bakes a variety of cake bites, brownies, tiffins and more. She does home delivery for those living in Brighton and Hove or you can collect your order from her near Elm Grove. She also, like many of the places featured on this post caters for those with dairy allergies, and other dietary requirements.

3. Terre a Terre

Unsurprisingly, Terre a Terre has made the cut. This vegetarian restaurant’s presentation is unparalleled and although on the pricier side, makes for a wonderful place to go for a celebration or a nice meal out. They have plenty of gluten free options or menu items which have the option of being made gluten free. Let me just read the description of an item on their pudding menu. The Snap, Crackle and Choc has the option to be gluten free; ‘Deep rich 70 % cacao mousse made with hazelnut cream on toasty praline, and chocolate shortbread, served with strawberry sorbet, and finished with tiny pink pepper berry aqua faba meringues, chocolate crack shards and dusty Sating twigs’. If that is not a luxury desert, I don’t know what is. They also offer a non-gluten afternoon tea spread which includes; sponges, truffle cakes and more.

2. Angel Food Bakery

In store, Angel Food Bakery usually have a gluten free cupcake of the day. However, they are included in my line up is because when ordering cakes for parties or for an occasion many of their cakes have the option of being made gluten free! What is special about the Angel Food Bakery is that they specialise in cake and cupcakes. They don’t delve into the realm of other sweet treats and are dedicated to cake baking, and they get it right. To prove this they have so many different sponge flavours, from; cookies and cream, raspberry and coconut, banana and peanut to classic, chocolate chocolate.

1.Cloud 9

Cloud 9 comes in at number one because their cheesecake brownies are heavenly. They literally put you on cloud 9. Many places do gluten free brownies, probably every supermarket will stock their own kind of gluten free brownies but they have yet to top these. The sweet soft brownie base contrasted with the savoury smooth cheesecake flavour makes you want to savour every bite. This treat is rich but perfect for any occasion and any time of year. If you are in the neighbourhood, gluten free or not I highly recommend you go check it out. They also have many other ‘gluten-wise’ products but if you are too spoilt for choice a safe bet is the cheesecake brownie.

This is a very limited list and much to my own preference. Gluten free is popping up everywhere on menu’s now and even in small bakeries. I’m sure we will be seeing a lot more of it soon here in Brighton.
