There’s a dating app for everyone, Disney lovers, tall people, those who have a gluten-free diet, apps for those who hate online dating and now there is a dating app for plus-size women.
WooPlus is a dating app that has been created for plus-size women and men who love curves, and its aim is to fill the gap in the market for those who often feel left out of the Tinder-esque-app scene. It follows a similar format to Tinder, with the users being able to swipe left or right, and then you can chat to those you’ve matched with. The CEO of the San Francisco-based app, Neil Raman, told the Mirror ‘The unfortunate reality is that the current dating environment is very cruel to bigger girls. It was very painful and unfair. I decided to solve this problem and create an app just for big girls’. Raman clearly found a gap in the market and since its launch in November, the app has gained over 10,000 users.
According to Neil Raman and fellow co-founder Michelle Li, the inspiration behind the app came after watching a viral video which showed a social experiment in which men were set up with women they thought were thing. They told The Daily Dot ‘There was a lot of mocking, and basically making her feel lesser of a person because of her size…we thought “that happens a lot” and we thought why don’t we come up with a dating app just to see what kind of result we’d get out of it’. The strapline of the app is ‘The most comfortable plus-size dating community: Big girls, you’ve got more admirers than you think’. Li said ‘We’re just trying to provide a comfortable environment for women who happen to be a little larger…it’s for women of all different bodies and sizes. But we wanted to show that you don’t need to have a low BMI to be attractive’. Too right.
