Sat atop one of Brighton’s busiest roads is the hustling and bustling hub that is Brighton Railway Station. We come in and out of it, sometimes on a daily basis, but how much do we know about the hectic station?
1. It was built in 1840 and initially only connected Brighton to Shoreham-By-Sea. Shortly afterwards it was connected to London Bridge.
2. In 2011/12 Brighton was the seventh-busiest station in the country outside of London.
3. The large double-spanned curved glass and iron roof was substantially renovated in 1999 and 2000.
4. It was listed Grade II* as of 30th April 1973.
5. Queuing systems are in place for football matches when trains to Falmer leave full and standing. Lewes Bonfire night also entails a queueing system due to the business of the station.
6. On the day of the London to Brighton bike ride in June, bikes are banned on many services.
