Manchester City’s Premier League title challenge suffered another damaging blow as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Brighton at the Etihad, dropping points for the third consecutive game to open 2026. Erling Haaland’s landmark 150th goal for the club—a 41st-minute penalty—looked set to return City to winning ways, but Kaoru Mitoma’s superb 60th-minute equalizer ensured Pep Guardiola’s side remain five points behind Arsenal, who can extend their advantage to eight with victory over Liverpool on Thursday.
The evening began ominously for City’s makeshift defense, forced into action with 20-year-old Max Alleyne making his senior debut alongside Abdukodir Khusanov, following serious injuries to Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias and John Stones. Brighton exploited the inexperience early, with Gianluigi Donnarumma twice performing heroics inside the opening 10 minutes to deny Pascal Gross and Ferdi Kadioglu.
City gradually asserted control and took the lead following a VAR intervention that upgraded Thomas Bramall’s initial decision after Diego Gomez tripped Jeremy Doku in the box. Haaland dispatched the spot-kick with trademark composure, ending a three-game goal drought and reaching his 150th City strike—a milestone achieved 28 games faster than any other Premier League player. The Norwegian’s goal was also the 35,000th in Premier League history.
But where City should have extended their advantage, they wasted chances with alarming regularity. Tijjani Reijnders saw a close-range effort cleared off the line by Jack Hinshelwood in first-half stoppage time, while Bernardo Silva struck the outside of the post immediately after the restart when presented with a gilt-edged opportunity.
Brighton punished City’s profligacy on the hour mark. Yasin Ayari threaded a pass to Mitoma on the edge of the area, and the Japanese winger—who had struck the post moments earlier—stroked a clinical finish through the legs of Nico Gonzalez and into the bottom corner for his second goal of the season.
The hosts pressed desperately for a winner in the closing stages. Haaland saw a 75th-minute header cleared off the line by Kadioglu, then inexplicably shot straight at Bart Verbruggen from eight yards after substitute Rayan Cherki presented him with the easiest chance of the match in the 81st minute. Cherki himself blazed over from a promising position as City created 22 shots worth 2.38 expected goals but converted just one.
Despite Alleyne’s accomplished debut—winning more duels than any City player in the first half—the defensive fragility remains concerning. City have now dropped nine points from winning positions this season, with five coming against Brighton across two meetings. Guardiola faces an FA Cup tie with Exeter City on Saturday before a Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle, with the congested fixture list threatening to derail their domestic ambitions entirely.
For Brighton, five points from three matches represents a solid recovery from their December slump, and they sit just five points off the top four. They face Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday riding renewed confidence.
