City council and First Base have selected Cosmo Sarson artist of ‘Angel of Brighton’ to paint a mural in the Edward Street Quarter.
Designed by First Base, Edward Street Quarter is the redevelopment of the Amex House. It will have three green spaces and a roof terrace, in addition there will be space for independent retailers. After its completion it will therefore biggest development for 25 years. Construction will commence in the autumn of 2019.
37 artists put themselves forward. however, Cosmo set himself apart because of his experience with large-scale works; exhibited by his distinctive ‘classic with a twist’ style.
Project Director, Steve Eccles, commented,
“He took an unexpected approach to the brief and presented a contemporary, delightfully Brighton design which will brilliantly welcome visitors to Edward Street Quarter.”
Cosmo is best known locally for the striking three-story ‘Angel of Brighton; mural. Which depicts a winged woman rising against a gold background. She became a local landmark in the North Laine.
Cosmo painted the internationally celebrated ‘Breaking-dancing Jesus’ in 2013. His work appears in blockbuster films. Including, The Favourite, Dumbo, The Guardian’s of the Galaxy, The Avengers – Age of Ultron. In addition to the new James Bond film in production.
Cosmo himself said,
“I’m over the moon to have got the job. I love Kemptown’s electric vibe and am really looking forward to creating an iconic landmark inspired by the neighbourhood’s fishing heritage.”
