Animal rights protesters entered a steakhouse restaurant and held a demonstration against the consumption of meat in central Brighton.

Around 20 people from the Brighton branch of Direct Action Everywhere held placards, played sounds of farmed animals being killed, and chanted on arrival at Touro Steakhouse, West Street on Saturday night.

Some of the chants which can be heard in the restaurant through a video published online include: “It’s not food, it’s violence” and “there’s no excuse for animal abuse”.

Madsu Sudan Galtam, manager at Touro, said: “They didn’t do anything aggressive but it was a bit annoying because it disrupted everyone.”

The protesters who promote the benefits of veganism were met with boos and shouting from customers when the group was asked to leave the restaurant.

Mr Galtam said they did make a phone call to the police but they did not arrive.

Direct Action Everywhere Brighton, responsible for hosting the protest, released the following statement:

“DxE actions are about disrupting normalised activities that depend on animal exploitation and suffering in a very public and non-violent way.

“Through these actions, we aim to get the conversation at the forefront of people’s minds and get people questioning everyday norms.

“It may seem extreme, as yes it is making a big statement, but when we have industries built on the mass killing of innocent animals, we have no time to lose.

“Human beings sat in restaurants munching on chopped up bodies is what’s really extreme. Legality does not equal morality and using animals in the way we do is not moral.”

The protest group also added the protest was not designed to target the individuals in the steakhouse, but to promote the message for their cause in the wider media.

DxE Brighton held their first call to action through a silent demonstration in the meat aisle in Tesco at the end of October this year.
