Protestors campaigning against the current lockdown situation forced the closure of a vaccination centre in Brighton and Hove over the weekend.
Footage from social media evidenced how various protestors, including the brother of former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Piers Corbyn, gathered around the bus of the centre in an effort to put pressure and prevent the distribution of vaccines to the waiting public.
In the video, Piers is seen celebrating the eventual departure of the vaccine bus on Saturday, referring to the invaluable services of the NHS as ‘scum’ and ‘disgusting specimens of humanity’.
Brighton and Hove CCG have confirmed that the site on Hove Lawns had postponed all treatment on the 11th of July, due to the dedicated medical staff having faced great disruption due to the protests occurring right across the city of Brighton.
In order to provide alternative facilities for citizens, a walk-in vaccination service was made available to all registered recipients to access their jabs at Brighton Racecourse from 2:30pm to 6:30pm, with walk in service provided all this week, including at the previously closed Brighton Centre from 8:30am.
This disturbance comes at a time when covid cases are believed to have been rising in the city, with council leader Phelim Mac Cafferty condemning the irresponsible actions that have seen the action of a few reckless local residents putting the lives of many others at risk.
The vaccination programme is an important part of the city’s safety protocol and the council have confirmed that there will be no change in actions simply because of the spread of misinformation being forced upon people.
The area has recorded 423.5 cases of infection per 100,000 people over the 7-day period up to the 5th of July according to reports.
This increase compounds current fears experienced by residents about the speed of the lockdown lifting procedure, with this coming Monday, July 19th, signalling the end of masks and social distancing nationwide.
