It’s a day later than usual but here is a round-up of the best arts and culture events going on across Brighton & Hove this week. There’s meetings for housing charities that you can involved in, there’s some amazing art and the usual eclectic mix of events that make Brighton, well…Brighton.
TUESDAY
Big Mad Andy’s Peep Show Quiz
This event is being run by the popular Facebook group ‘Dobby Club’ and features the real Peep Show cast member Liam Noble AKA Big Mad Andy. There is a maximum of six people per team so grab your closest mates with the best knowledge of the cult classic TV show and get questioned by the emotionally unstable but lovable man that is Big Mad Andy.

ACORN Brighton Members’ Branch Meeting
ACORN, the charity that we recently wrote a piece about, are holding their monthly meeting tonight. They stand against corrupt landlords and rising rent prices. This month they are planning their ‘Not One Universal Credit Eviction Campaign’ and will be looking at how they can build the union in the months ahead. The meetings are for members only so if you are not already a member you can sign up for as much or as little as you see fit, however they suggest an hours wages per month of membership.

Wednesday Nights at Art by Johnny – A Normal Family: Book Launch
Alongside the new exhibition ‘Art by Johnny’ at Phoenix Brighton, the gallery are hosting a series of free events. On Wednesday of this week, the talented artist Johnny Carroll-Pell and his parents will be discussing and showing their new book ‘A Normal Family’. Johnny was diagnosed with severe autism at the age of two and his parents, the poet, writer and broadcaster Henry Normal and his screenwriter wife Angela Pell present a “wonderful self-portrait of a family with autism at its heart. Uplifting and grounded, frank and encouraging, serious and funny, A Normal Family, affirms that there is life after an ASD diagnosis”. The event is free but the space is limited so get down early to nab a seat.

Singles Evening @ The Richmond
If you’re single or you just want to meet new people while having a very big giggle head to The Richmond on Wednesday night. It’s a cheeky take on speed-dating and they say themselves “never will you learn more about someone than when you are playing this game…it’s a great icebreaker so is ideal for social situations which can prove a bit nerve-wracking when meeting people for the first time”. Head down and have a laugh with all new people.

Sunflower Bean / Sorry @ Concorde 2
It’s not arts but it definitely is culture, this Thursday everyone’s favourite alt-rock band Sunflower Bean come to Concorde’s stage. The lead singer, Julia Cumming, has proven that just because she’s a girl in rock it doesn’t equate to the genre she plays as ‘girl rock’. Their signed to uber-cool label Fat Possum Records and absolutely killed it last time they played Brighton. Don’t miss the chance to see them play their beautiful rock tunes.

Fringe Academy: Making a Living in the Arts
The perks of working in the arts can be so great and fulfilling but as a career, it’s difficult to forge a path without heaps of money within a ever-saturated industry. This workshop acts a platform to hear new ideas and existing ones pertaining to how you can make a creative outlet financially viable. The Fringe Academy aims to create opportunities for individuals who want to expand their understanding of the arts and want to provide skills based training and targeted support for young people in the industry. The conversation is almost guaranteed to be good so if you’re one of the countless art students or artists in Brighton this is a great chance to learn how you can make money off your passions.

Fat Cabaret
A gem in Brighton’s Cabaret scene, this fat-positive body-positive show encourages everyone to celebrate fat bodies in a safe and supporting space. It’s been created by Mathilda Gregory, the lady behind ‘How To Be Fat’ and producer Rosie Blackwell-Sutton. The whole show is about encouraging positivity in the way you look and feel, a thought often overlooked in our times of Instagram and the inundation of targeted adverts. There are some real treasures performing this show, expect great vibes from the likes of Lady Blue Phoenix, Smashlyn Monroe, Clare DeLoon and many more.

All Girl Comics: Women Only Comedy Open Mic
This is the third in the series of all girl comic open mics before they play Brighton Fringe. It’s all female comics but the gender of the crowd isn’t exclusive so head down no matter how you identify to catch some of the funniest women in town. MC Karen Blott will be introducing the comics all evening long with her own brand of funny. It’s being hosted at Junkyard Dogs so go down to the charming venue for drinks and laughter all night long.
