As autumn arrives, Brighton Toy and Model Museum stands at a moment of exciting transformation. This season marks the beginning of our long-planned regeneration project on Trafalgar Street, a development that will not only enhance the museum’s visibility and visitor experience but also revitalise one of Brighton’s key gateways.
While restoration work continues, the museum remains very much open, welcoming visitors to discover the timeless beauty of our collection.
Alongside the regeneration project, we are delighted to announce a series of seasonal events from special open days to family-friendly trails, designed to celebrate the museum’s heritage, community, and enduring sense of play.

Regeneration on Trafalgar Street: A New Era Begins
|
|
|
Work has now commenced on the Trafalgar Street regeneration project, the most significant transformation in the museum’s history.
|
|
|
The improvements include a new 20-foot glazed entrance, giving visitors and passers-by a first glimpse of our remarkable collection from street level. The redevelopment will also feature Victorian-style lanterns, bespoke Southern Railway-inspired brass fittings, and architectural lighting by iGuzzini, designed to brighten the surrounding arches and create a safer, more inviting route into the city.

The project also includes the restoration of the celebrated Brighton Belle mural, continuing the museum’s long tradition of connecting local culture with national heritage.
Museum Manager Jan Etches notes:
“This is more than just a facelift. These improvements will transform the first impression many people have when they arrive in Brighton — and mark a new era for the museum itself.”
Throughout this period, the museum remains open to visitors, with a 25% admission discount in place while works are ongoing. Completion is scheduled for the end of October, followed by a reopening celebration later in the year.

It’s been a busy and exciting time for Brighton Toy and Model Museum – our regeneration story has been making headlines across the region!
We’ve been featured by The Argus, Sussex Express, Insider Media, Inside Publications, The Business Magazine, and Brighton Chamber, all celebrating the start of our major regeneration project and the bright new chapter ahead.
From the new glazed façade to refreshed murals and heritage lighting, the transformation is capturing imaginations across Sussex.

Saturday, November 8th | Train-Mania: A Special Train Running Day
As part of the National Railway 200 celebrations, the museum will host Train-Mania, a special event honouring two centuries of railway innovation and heritage.
Founder and Director Chris Littledale will personally demonstrate a selection of his Legendary Locomotives on the museum’s impressive 0-gauge layout. For this day only, protective screens will be lifted to allow visitors a rare, close-up view of the locomotives in motion.
Booking is strongly advised, as capacity is limited.

Sunday, November 2nd | Cocktails & Wagging Tails: Doggy Open Day
A truly unique occasion for Brighton’s dog lovers. On Sunday, November 2nd, visitors are invited to bring their canine companions for a relaxed and sociable open day inside the museum.
The event includes a complimentary cocktail (courtesy of Madame Jennifer Distillery), a snack box for guests, and a treat bag for dogs. All proceeds will be shared between Brighton Toy and Model Museum and the RSPCA Brighton Branch.

October 10th – November 1st | The Halloween Trail
This half term, young visitors can take part in a spooky and playful Halloween Trail through the museum’s atmospheric arches. Children are invited to hunt for friendly ghosts hidden among the exhibits, from vintage trains to beloved toy figures, combining discovery with gentle Halloween fun.
The museum will also be open on Monday, October 27th, offering extended half-term hours to make the most of the season.
It’s a delightful way for families to enjoy the collection — with a touch of mystery in the air.
