Fenne Lily @ Hope & Ruin

The gentle and beautiful sounds of Fenne Lily will fill the Hope & Ruin’s gig venue on Wednesday evening. She racked up over 20 million streams on Spotify for ‘Top to Toe’, the first song she had ever written! It’s difficult to compare Fenne Lily to any other artist despite the genre she sits in being over-run with same-old and boring artists, she takes the classic singer-songwriter formula and does her own thing with quavering vocals and brutally honest lyrics over the top of delicate and simple guitar-based tracks. This is a chance to see her play in an intimate venue before she breaks through into the charts, don’t miss out.

Hope & Ruin. 11-12 Queens Road, BN1 3WA.

TUESDAY

Beats ’N’ Pieces Presents: Benn Clatworthy

Hastings-born and London-raised jazz musician Benn Clatworthy will play The Mesmerist on Tuesday evening. Clatworthy has been playing Jazz since the 1970’s and moved to Los Angeles in 1980 to study saxophone, flute and clarinet with musical legend Phil Sobel. Whilst in LA he has been a key fixture of the jazz clubs for many many years and has played with the likes of Jimmy Cleveland, Cab Calloway, The Temptations, Cyndi Lauper, The Mills Brothers and more. He will be joined by Loz Thomas on drums, Max Kahn on bass and Oil Howes on keys. The Mesmerist does some really amazing cocktails and unique drinks and the event is free!

Penelope Isles / Lingua Nada / Night Vision @ The Green Door Store

Penelope Isles are slowly but surely taking the ambient indie scene by storm. With a large following steadily growing the band have been around since 2016 with their fuzzy guitar and melodic pop-laced hooks. They are the ultimate summer-vibes bands with influences coming from Grizzly Bear, Deerhunter and The Magic Numbers. They are similar to Mac Demarco with their vocal tones and twinkly guitar but carry a lot more power behind their songs. Fronted by brother and sister duo Jack and Lily Wolter, Penelope Isles will ‘make it’ in the next year without a doubt. Support comes from Dog Knight’s band Lingua Nada from Leipzig, Germany who are killing it all across Europe, if you like Pavement and Weezer you will love them. Finally on the bill are Night Vision, the latest addition to Brighton’s ever growing rock scene. Night Vision are for fans of Dinosaur Jr, Hum, Duster etc etc etc and have just put out a truly great first single on Brighton label Echochamp. Don’t miss the chance to see three of the best bands around at the moment.

The Green Door Store. 7 Trafalgar Arches, BN1 4FQ.

THURSDAY

Jigsaw Fest

This Thursday sees the inauguration of Jigsaw Fest. The aim of the festival is to raise as much money as possible for the National Autistic Society, whilst also promoting the plethora of musical talent Brighton has to offer. There are 10 acts in total playing from 3 o’clock onwards at The Bees Mouth in Hove. Music will come from Romarni Brytz, Amelia Barnard, Holly Deanna, Miles Goodall, Lara Well, Rare Devices, Lyza, Youth Sector, Great Wight and Frank & Beans. The organisers have warned that due to it being such a small venue space, the capacity will be first come, first serve whether or not you have a ticket so make sure to get down early.

The Bees Mouth. 10 Western Road, BN3 1AE.

FRIDAY

Vegan Food Bank fundraiser gig with Squig/Dog of Man/TCTAP/Feral Youth

The Brighton Vegan Food Bank needs donations to continue helping those in need. This Friday they will be offering vegan treats, great bands and even better beer, all in aid of the Mutual Aid VeGan food bank. They have Squig, a relatively new Brighton bands who have been making waves in the scene since last November, carefully honing their live set. Additionally there will be ‘‘LOUD when they want to be but stripped back and pretty when required’’ Feral Youth and Dog of Man, the best and filthiest electric cacophony Brighton has to offer. If you can bring down some donations with you, rice, pasta, beans are more than welcome and anything else that is long-lasting. Help a little and gain a lot from the evening!

The Cowley Club. 12 London Road, BN1 4JA.
